For Lauren Cox, third overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft and newest member of the Indiana Fever’s stacked frontcourt, blocking shots has always been a key part of her skill set.

“I think it really happens within a split second,” she told me on a recent podcast. “It’s just how the game is flowing, whether you have to come from outside the block a shot, whether your teammates know that they can defend someone on their own. It’s instinct, and it’s kind of something I’ve always had.”

The numbers back her up: 26th in the country in block rate as a freshman, 35th as a senior.

Cox discussed the evolution of her game, the way she fits playing next to a traditional big like Kalani Brown or now, Teaira McCowan, and lots more.
