Mississippi State University is getting a player with an “MJ mentality” that could serve the team well, so says her AAU Coach.
“Jazz is the best shooter I have ever coached, her work ethic leadership and MJ mentality makes her different,” NBA champion and former Dallas Maverick Jason “Jet” Terry told The Next.
Shavers, ranked fourth-best player in Texas and the 60th best player in the nation in the Class of 2021 by ESPNw HoopGurlz, committed to the SEC’s Mississippi State University last week.
Shavers played AAU basketball with Texas-based Lady Drive Nation, coached by Terry, now an assistant basketball coach at Arizona.
“She is a humble young lady with a great smile and infectious attitude. Her future is very bright!”
Shavers, a 5’10 four-star guard out of Mesquite Horn High School, announced her commitment via Twitter with a video thanking her family, friends and coaches, including Terry.
Shavers is the Dallas area’s No. 1 girls basketball recruit in next year’s class. She chose MSU over several big name schools including Kentucky, Rutgers, Tennessee and Texas Tech.
Last year Shavers was named Offensive Player of the Year last year and an All-State in District 11-6A, averaging 18.9 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.3 assists. Mesquite Horn finished as the No. 2 seed in the district. They lost in the first round of playoffs to Waco Midway.
This is the Mississippi State Bulldogs women’s basketball team third commitment from a high-profile recruit in the Class of 2021 espnW top 100 list.
Mia Moore committed to Mississippi State last week. The 5’7 guard from St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Georgia is No. 87 in the espnW 100. She expressed her excitement for Shavers via Twitter.
On May 29, Knisha Godfrey, a 5’9 point guard from Florida and one of the top high school basketball players in the country, committed to Mississippi State as well. She is ranked as the No. 93 player in the country for her class.
Mississippi State was 27-6 and ranked No 9 in the nation by the Associated Press when the season was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
